Sage graduates: Alex Nielson’s child care career change interview on 3AW

On the 13th of April, Sage Institute of Child Care graduate, Alex Nielson, was interviewed on 3AW about his fantastic new career and life changing experience after studying at Sage. In a segment on career changes, hosts of the weekly Courses and Careers show, Steve Price and Danny Bielik asked Alex about his interesting story and what lead him to pursue a career in early childhood education.

Let’s find out what Alex had to say…

Host Danny: Thanks for coming on tonight. You had a bit of an interesting story. What happened with you?

Alex: Yeah, I lived overseas for a few years and when I came back to Australia, the qualification that I had was a certificate in cooking.

Host Danny: And you had a problem? You had RSI…and decided it was time for a change, and a really big change too?

Alex: Oh yeah, it’s worked well for me!

After returning to Australia with an injury, Alex had to reconsider his career path. While he was overseas, he had experience with teaching English to children and “really got to like it”. Contacting Sage about training in early childhood education was a no-brainer for Alex:

Host Danny: …What happened, you walked in one day to Sage and said “I’ve been doing cooking, I’ve been overseas, I’ve been teaching English, now I want to be in child care”… How did that work out?

Alex: Well I contacted Sage through their web page, and I got a call back from them the same day.

Alex started with Certificate III studies, before upgrading to a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. He completed his studies in May 2015, and since graduating has been working as a casual child care worker through an agency, with great pay and conditions. So how does Alex feel about this clearly successful career move?

Host Steve: So you got a teaching bug, so you decided to come back here and rather than work out the elbow in the kitchen, early childhood would work out. And how is that, are you enjoying it Alex?

Alex: Really, really enjoying it.

Alex’s story proves that with right motivation and the right course, a successful and rewarding career change is possible, no matter what your background and previous training.
